The deep freeze:  Free speechers should offer a nod of recognition to Simon Fothergill. Mr. Fothergill, a lawyer who toils for Canada’s Attorney-General, has compressed the philosophy of the anti-hate Utopians into a single brief sentence. In an article by the National Post’s Joseph Bream, he is quoted as saying

that if Section 13 puts a chill on public discourse, it is only to be around the fringes of hate speech, and that this is not "a terribly bad outcome."

"A little bit of chilling ... is tolerable," he said.

“A little bit of chilling,” huh? Isn’t that kind of like being “a little bit pregnant”? I know, let’s ask that peerless moral authority Alfred P. Doolittle. Surely he’ll have the answer:

The Lord above gave man a voice to speak with

So he could say whatever’s on ‘is mind.

The Lord above gave man a voice to speak with, but

With a little bit of chill, with a little bit of chill,

He’ll say only what is “nice” and “kind”.

The Lord above gave man a mind to think with

So he could figure out what’s right and sage.

The Lord above gave mind a mind to think with, but

With a little bit of chill, with a little bit of chill,

We’ll all end up on the same lame page.

With a little bit, with a little bit,

With a little bit of chill we’ll read that page.

With a little bit, with a little bit

With a little bit of censorship.

The Lord above made man to help ‘is neighbour,

By bein’ polite, and never mean or squalid.

The Lord above made man to help ‘is neighbour, but

With a little bit of chill, with a little bit of chill,

Fings’ll end up gettin’ frozen solid.

With a little bit, with a little bit,

With a little bit of chill it’s frozen solid.

They’re always throwin’ “goodness” at you;

But with a little bit of chill you’ll get your fill.

Oh, it’s a “crime” to criticize sharia,

Also jihad, and Blacks and gays and Jews.

Oh, it’s a “crime” to criticize sharia, but,

With a little bit of chill,

With a little bit of chill,

There’s no way sharia’s gonna lose.

With a little bit, with a little bit,

With a little bit of chill we’ll never win.

With a little bit, with a little bit

With a little bit of censorship...

What a piece of work- that a government lawyer, with his comfy $200K/annum sinecure, can blithely tell a senior quasi-judicial administrative tribunal that freedom of speech may be constrained through bureaucratic edict.

My prediction? Lemire walks. The Canadian HRC industry is scared sh*less of the firestorm that Steyn, Levant, KS and elMo's sockpuppets have ignited, and wants the entire mess swept under the carpet so that the troughers can get back to tax-payer-funded travel and la dolce vita, unscrutinised.

The CHRCs= loses either way. If Lemire walks, it widens the crack in its crumbling foundation. If the thought cops can't resist punishing him (and I have a feeling that, despite the heat they're taking, they won't be able to) it's more evidence of their totalitarian censorship methods, and will provide more impetus for those determined to restore free speech.
