Chilling thoughts: A letter in the National Post applauds the CJC/Weimar approach to “free speech”:

Re: Lesley Hughes' Hateful Fantasy, Bernie M. Farber, Oct. 6.

Conspiracy theorists are entitled to their opinions, but the right to free expression ceases at the moment that it causes harm by vilifying an identifiable group.

Bernie Farber understands correctly that evil deeds follow evil words and that 9/11 "truth seekers" need to wake up and realize that their accusations against Jews and Israel have serious consequences in the real world.

Rubin Burstyn, Thornhill, Ont.

Actually, Rubin, in Germany’s case the evil deeds followed years of censorship—the same kind we have in operation here in Canada. But no doubt it’s a great comfort to you and other Jews to think that robbing everyone of their free expression is a small price to pay if its ends the vilification (even though, clearly, it has done nothing of the kind, as evidenced by the ever-popular Israeli Apartheid Week, Malarkey MacKinnon in the Globe and Mail and the vilifying words expressed, freely and fulsomely, by leaders of the CAF, the CIC and other anti-Zionist groups).

It is frankly just palin stupid to compare Nazi Germany and 100s of years of vile German anti-Semitism to anything in Canada. Get a grip!!

Actually such an analogy betrays an ignorance of not only of German/Jewish history but a total misunderstanding of the socio-economic travails present in Europe following the signing of the Treaty of Versailles.

Germany was almost bankrupt. The Weimar republic was such in name only. It did little to put any needed salve on the wounded ego of Germany and fell flat on its face when it came to putting food in the common person’s stomach.

Hitler offered a scapegoat...the Jewish banker, the world Jewish conspiracy all combining to restrain the German from his natural place on top of the Aryan ladder.

While it’s true to say that laws were passed to try and stop Hitler's ranting it was certainly not these laws that led to Hitler's ascension. They were not even part of the mix.

All that said the first commenter is also correct it is odious to compare Germany of the 1930s to Canada of the 21st century. All it tells intelligent readers is that the author of this blog is far more interested in pushing a specific agenda than understanding and analyzing history.

A thought prior to Yom Kippur. Exactly how has anyone robbed Leslie Hughes of her free speech. All Farber said was with anti-Semitic nonsense as she espouses she shouldn't be an MP.

I'm stymied; why would you support the anti-Semitic musings of Leslie Hughes? No one says she hasn't the right to her hateful views but ought they not be exposed for the world to see? Should Dion not have fired her? You are about the only one I know who would have a person who supports anti-Semitic views in the H/C. Wierd!

Farber and co betray a breathtaking level of ignorance of actual history. As the offspring of a Holocaust survivor mother, my siblings and I were raised with a very real take on these historic events. And like our mother, we reserve a special kind of disdain for the Canadian Jewish Congress, Bernie Farber, and other conveniently historically revisionist Jews/organizations.

I believe in calling a spade a spade. In this case, Bernie Farber is ignorant of history or shilling for the Left/Liberals or both.

Plus ca change...
