Let the swooning begin: Pierre’s spawn is sworn in as an M.P.; the Toronto Star looks on fawningly:
OTTAWA–With his year-old son in his arms and mother Margaret looking on, Justin Trudeau followed in his father's footsteps into Parliament yesterday.
"Justin started off as a newborn in these chambers and now he's here," Margaret Kemper, the former wife of Pierre Trudeau, said later.
Justin Trudeau's swearing-in as an MP, which immediately reignited questions about a future bid for the Liberal leadership, came 43 years after his late father, the former prime minister, was first elected to the House of Commons.
Justin Trudeau, 36, was elected in the Montreal riding of Papineau.
"It's a privilege and an honour that I accept with grace, hopefully, and humility, certainly," he told about 100 party workers and supporters from his riding who attended the ceremony.
Trudeau, who did not take questions from reporters yesterday, has dismissed suggestions that he might seek the leader's job. But with his charismatic good looks and high-powered heritage, it's a possibility that keeps popping up.
His mother isn't ruling it out.
"I am not a psychic," she laughed, speaking with reporters after the swearing-in.
But, she said: "I think that Justin has the potential to be a great politician. He has very good values, he's well educated and he has big dreams. So, whether he becomes leader or not is entirely in the stars and up to him."
Trudeau's mother, the daughter of one-time MP James Sinclair, said the event brought back memories.
"As a little girl, I was here a lot as part of my childhood. And, of course, married to Pierre, I was here a lot. And now, knowing that I'm back here for my son, I'm just so proud of Justin."
Trudeau thanked his supporters and said he would work to draw attention to the realities confronting people in his riding, such as lack of jobs, the need for social housing and "the future of our children."…
Doesn't exactly have the same impact as "Yes, we can" and “hope ‘n’ change,” but he can finetune the message as he goes along.
